Furries WTF? Utterly confused....
One of the things that i've seen and has came to my attention while being stuck here is all the different cultures and communities that have sprung up on the internet. I cannot for the life of me understand the concept of 'Furries'. They keep springing up everywhere, I go, even on JTV.
I had to ban one from my room the other night? I jst don't get it? Why do these people think dressing up in a warner bros costume and having sex while pretending to be animals is okay?
Can someone explain it to me? I really don't get it!

I can't see how people could get off on that sort of thing either, but that's the beauty (and comedy in this case) in it huh?

its just a weird thing altogether...

Taking things way out of context
First off....have you ever heard the saying "sex sells"?

That is what the media has done with Furry, the have portrayed the sexual side of things that a very small percentage are involved in. There are a lot of Furries that are not into that, that are straight, christian, good people. Sex is also part of life that everyone loves to dig into. Just look at things like the "Tail Hook Affair" issues that have happened with the Shriners at conventions and lots of other groups. You are taking this as gospel just by what you see in the media. It would be the same thing as people assuming you were doing time for a sex crime without getting all the facts and just making an assumption.

I work with several different charities and have raised in excess of $100k for charities such as Tiger Haven, American Red Cross along with many others. I do volunteer work in a variety of avenues as well.

So please don't assume just as you don't want people to assume about you

Re: Taking things way out of context
Hi, thank you for your comment.
If i was doing time for a sex crime, I don't think I would be doing it from home somehow.
Okay, if it's not a fetish or a sexual thing, why in the blue earth would grown, adults want to play at being cartoon characters in bugs bunny suits? I just don't get it?

Yeah hey- do you mind taking me off your list? I mean if you really super-duper badly WANT to watch me for some unknown reason that's fine- you just won't see much from me as everything I post these days is generally under a filter. Also, based on this entry here, I won't be reading much of you.

No offense or anything- I (sort of) understand your predicament, but my life isn't here to entertain ANYONE, even you. And if you added me ONLY because of my associations with furry, even the slightest perusal of my profile page SHOULD have indicated to any relatively perceptive person that the description you've given here does not fit me (and ergo, not EVERYONE involved in some way in that fandom.)

I am sitting here with to my left another furry and to my right a non-furry, and they both believe that you are a furry. The non-furry to my right believes that you are specifically a kangaroo.

Thoughts with regard to that?
jesseconfinedjesseconfined on March 27th, 2009 03:55 pm (UTC)
the only furry thing about me is my beard my good man.
Kangaroo burgers are tasty though. Those ar my thoughts regarding that.

not all furry crap is sex related believe it or not. first off don't believe the fucking media for nothing.
I myself have always had this "child like" fascination with cartoon caricatures & costumed mascots. I used to be extremely shy & always wanted to act & I could never get myself to do it. But when I am hidden under my mask I am free to be myself. I have been doing volunteer for the last 4 years now helping out to raise money for cancer, MS, Special Olympics & so on. Makes me feel great to be able to put a smile on someones face & some cheer in there heart.

thats great :) I have a lot of healthy respect for those that donate their free time to charity work and trying to make peoples lifes better!
Its also appreciated that you people are taking the time to respond and explain to me what it means, and if it has done you good in personal way due your shyness, then it obviously works for you :)
If you read one of my replies further down it explains why I was asking etc. i certainly wasnt ragging on anyone.
im a new to all this and i keep finding out about lots of things that i hadnt heard of before and i always want to learn more about people and things

Seriously, who asks a group of people to be their friend and then goes and makes a negative post about these people's lives? What I can't understand is why you are concerning yourself with how other people choose to live. You aren't going to keep your "friends" for long if you continue making negative posts about what they do with their lives.
jesseconfinedjesseconfined on March 27th, 2009 11:31 pm (UTC)
I'm not making a negative comment.
I'm concerned about other peoples lives because i've never experienced the fur thing until the other day, and i wanted to learn more

Simple, modern tribalism. Or at least to some it is. I think I'm an actual lion about as much as my native friend Sally Three-Bears (bear clan of course) thinks she's a bear. We can all gain strength or characteristics we admire in this manner and have for tens of thousands of years. I've been through stuff in the last few years that even hardened bastards have admitted to me, would have put them in the bug-house. How did I get through them? Tapped that inner lion of course. I didn't curl up and die, I roared, usually along to some seriously hardcore tuneage.

"Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask and he will tell you the truth."
- Oscar Wilde

We all wear masks, uniforms, colors. You ride so you know that. My mentor when I was a young-un was an old Satan's Choice from Hamilton BTW, hell of a guitar player. And y'know I've never thought of this before but back in the early 80's I'm sure your average hardcore punk turned as many heads as someone in a wolf mask and paws, more even (should have seen some of my friends!) Everyone dresses to project something they want others to see or to fit into a mold that someone else dictates (suit 'n' tie anyone?)

"Some people never go crazy... What truely horrible lives they must live."
- Charles Bukowski

You won't find much of the furry stuff on my journal, you will find however a lot of killer photography and a fair bit of fun ranting. No trivialities, unless they're very important! ;p Really though if you've got time to kill and wanna check out a few really weird years in a really weird life, have a browse! Careful though, I killed and ate the last hillbilly who tried to set up camp here!

I have a couple of friends who are furries. I don't really get it either. They don't talk about being furries all the time, though, and they have other interests that I also share, so we do actually have things to talk about.

Hi, by the way. I don't think you sent me a comment before adding me...just curious how you found me and why you decided to add me. :)

Hello Jesse! First of all, please tell me that if you do get enough donations and are able to go back to court (and hopefully, get a better break in the deal) that you won't drive without your license? I know your family needs your support, and I definately feel for your situation as I probably would have done similar myself, but I wouldn't want you to end up back in the same situation. Or worse!

Well, there is a lot of negative media out there in regards to the furry fandom. It is a much bigger fandom than most people realize, encompassing people from all walks of life. Some view it as a sexual fetish of sorts, others have a more spiritual view, some people just like the art. Unfortunately, as has been mentioned, "sex sells" in media so that seems to be the part of the fandom that media has covered the most. Plus we, as humans, have the tendency to mock what we don't understand... so we pull the nastiest, "weirdest" parts of something out to point and laugh. That leads us to only see the "weirdos," so to speak.

First of all, I'm not really a furry. I enjoy the art and have what I consider to be a "character" that is drawn, but I do not really identify myself as a furry. There are spiritual reasons to my ties to the animal world. I am a long time practitioner of shamanism and the natural world is an intrigal part of that.

I know (and know of) many people that are varying degrees of "furry" from those who believe they are a specific animal born into a human body, to those who are making their money doing furry or fantasy art and are no more into the fandom than that. I am more of an observer, you could say. I am also someone who believes strongly that even if I do not believe the same as they, that they have the right to follow whatever path they choose.

For those that view it from a sexual perspective, it is no different than the plethora of other fetishes out there. There may be no "logical" reason behind it to more "vanilla" minds, but to those who practice it there is no other way to be.

For those who view it more spiritually, they tend to feel akin to whatever animal. They see traits that they too wish they had. Maybe it's the freedom? Or the power? Maybe it's a total escape from being human and all the responsibilities there-in. I think most people in the modern world sometimes wish to escape it all... maybe it's a way for these people to take a mental vacation and "be" something they aren't.

Believe me when I say, too, that not all "furs" are into fursuiting... let alone having sex in fur-suits. In fact, there are a fair number that are totally creeped out by the idea. lol

Ultimately, this is just the tip of the iceberg. Everyone has different reasons... and one must take everything with a grain of salt. I have met some of the most disgusting, socially disturbing, people in the furry fandom. I have also met some of the kindest, most well adjusted, people. You just can't group them all in together, really, and dismiss them in one lump sum.

Hello :) & thank you for your kind words about my situation! I would never drive without my license again - I have learned my lesson. House arrest is driving me nuts and not being able to provide for my children is tearing me up.

Also thank you for your very well written and considerate reply as to my questions about the furry fandom. I was really confused about it and perhaps small minded, i really wasnt trying to upset anyone, but i had two 'furrys' in my chatroom the other evening and they were bombarding me with obscene art and being verbally abusive to all the chatters, and I ended up having to ban one of them.
This is what led me to asking more about it in this post, as the one thing I have is plenty of time on my hands, I wanted to find out more about what they were about and where they were coming from. I am from indiana and have lived a pretty interesting life, being an ex biker, and thought i had seen it all, but the internet has opened me up to lots of things i would not have seen or heard of before. I guess i'm jst curious and im not good with words

Well since I've just noticed your watching me and you ask so bluntly I'll give it a go.

Furry is a very abstract fandom that can be superimposed onto anything. Because of this all different groups of people shape it to what they want to do, and all of those groups think that they comprise the bulk of the fandom. IE The fursuiters will tell you everyone is a fursuiter and the artists will tell you it's all about the art and the crazy fetish people will tell you it's all about that. Furry has to do with anthropomorphics, applying human characteristics to animals. Generally the best way to describe most furry characters is like Star Trek aliens, they walk and talk and have that human shape to them and they are people, not dumb animals. As for why we're into it, I dont know. Why is anyone into anything? Why would anyone bother to be into Star Wars, it's not real, the hot alien chicks arent real, so why would any self respecting grown man be into such a thing? It's just good fun.

By the way why are you watching me anyway?
jesseconfinedjesseconfined on April 9th, 2009 10:21 pm (UTC)
Ty for your response.
I thought you had an interesting journal, thats why I would watch it.
